Almshouses have arrived in BudleighAs a local charity, The Shandford Trust, has taken its first step and has built three new almshouses for older residents in need in the heart of Budleigh Salterton. Their first residents moved into their new homes in June 2026. Almshouses have served a charitable role in this country for over a thousand years. They are now, once again, answering an urgent need of their time, serving as a lifeline for those over 60 who may not qualify for traditional social housing. Residents pay a maintenance charge below usual market rates. Designed for warm, comfortable living with low running costs, the new homes are ideally situated next to Seachange, Budleigh’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. |

The Shandford Trust was established following the sale in 2020 of Abbeyfield Shandford, a former care home in Budleigh Salterton. The proceeds of that sale, together with any remaining legacy funds, were made over to this new charity for the benefit of the people of Budleigh Salterton and surrounding villages. In this way, the value and heritage of the former home have been preserved for the local people for whom the home was first intended. |
